New vs. Used Hot Tubs: What No One Tells You

Thinking about bringing home a hot tub in the Treasure Valley? Whether you’re in Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell, Eagle, Emmett, or nearby, there’s a lot more to “new vs. used” than the sticker price.

As a family-owned business with decades of hands-on service experience, we’ve seen what really matters once a spa is sitting on your patio. Below, we pull back the curtain on costs, comfort, maintenance, and long-term realities most people don’t hear until after they’ve bought.

Our goal: help you get the best value for your budget—without surprises.

The Real Price: What’s Beyond the Sticker

It’s easy to compare price tags. The tricky part is understanding the total cost of ownership.

What’s included (and what’s not).

Some prices exclude a cover, cover lifter, steps, chemicals, delivery, and setup. At Love’s Hot Tubs, our all-inclusive pricing includes:

  • Cover
  • Cover lifter
  • Steps
  • Complete chemical kit
  • Local Treasure Valley delivery
  • Backyard setup (electrical not included)

That can save you thousands compared to piecing everything together later.

Hidden freight and “curbside” delivery.

National online deals often sound great until you add freight, lift-gate, and backyard placement fees—or find out it’s curbside only. Local delivery and proper placement matter, and they’re included with us for local customers.

Electrical work.

Most 220V spas require a dedicated GFCI breaker and proper wiring by a licensed electrician. Plug-and-play (110V) tubs can save on up-front electrical, but they have trade-offs (more on that below).

Energy efficiency.

Insulation quality, a tight-fitting insulated cover, and modern pumps/control systems can shave real dollars off your monthly bill. A “cheap” tub that costs more to run can become the priciest choice over time.

Service after the sale.

Who fixes it if something goes wrong? Who carries parts? Local support with a clear warranty is worth its weight in gold.

Energy Efficiency: Why Insulation and Covers Matter

Energy costs become a big factor if you plan to soak year-round, especially in Idaho.

Insulation type.

Full-foam insulation typically retains heat best and helps reduce plumbing vibration. Some perimeter-insulated tubs can also be efficient if engineered well—the key is a thoughtful insulation strategy that matches our cold Idaho nights.

Cover quality and fit.

A heavy, well-sealed cover with a high foam density and an intact vapor barrier makes a significant difference in heat loss. A worn-out, waterlogged cover is one of the most expensive energy leaks you can have.

Pumps and control systems.

Well-matched pumps and efficient control systems lower operating costs and noise, and give more stable temperatures.

Usage habits.

How often you soak, how long you run jets, and how often you open the cover all matter. Steady, moderate settings are often more efficient than big temperature swings.

New hot tubs

Especially premium lines like Artesian Elite, Island Spas, South Seas, Garden Spas, and TidalFit Swim Spas, along with Nordic Luxury, Sport Edition, Modern, Classic, and All-In-110V Series—generally come with the latest insulation and controls. A well-reconditioned used spa can also be efficient if it has a solid shell, proper insulation, and a quality cover. Don’t be afraid to ask about insulation and energy specs.

Warranty and Service: Where the Real Value Shows Up

Warranties are not all created equal. You want clarity on what’s covered, for how long, and who does the work.

Manufacturer warranty (new).

New Artesian and Nordic models come with factory-backed warranties on the shell, structure, equipment, and components. This is a major advantage—parts availability and authorized service are streamlined.

Reconditioned warranty (used).

Quality reconditioned tubs should come with a meaningful in-house warranty from the seller. At Love’s Hot Tubs, our reconditioned spas include clear, written warranties tailored to the work we’ve performed, so you know exactly what’s covered.

Local service.

The person who sells it should be the person who can fix it. Our owner, Jasyn Love, is a second-generation hot tub repair technician with a reputation for deep technical knowledge in the Treasure Valley. That matters when you need fast, local support.

Water Care: Ozone, UV, and Easy Maintenance

Water care systems affect how often you balance water, how clear it stays, and how much time you spend on maintenance.

  • Ozone and UV. Many new models offer ozone and/or UV options that help reduce sanitizer demand and improve clarity. Some used tubs can be upgraded with ozone; UV retrofits may be possible depending on the control pack.
  • Filtration. Look for easy-access filters and enough filter area for the spa’s water volume. Better filtration = clearer water + less work.
  • Chemicals included. Our all-inclusive packages include a complete chemical kit so you can start clean and stay balanced from day one.

Bottom line: new tubs integrate the latest water care tech, but a properly reconditioned spa with good filtration and ozone can also be very easy to maintain.

Comfort and Fit: Jets, Ergonomics, and Noise

Jet count isn’t the whole story. Placement, jet type, pump power, and ergonomics are what separate “looks nice” from “wow.”

  • Seat ergonomics. Sit before you commit. Seat depth, angle, and footwell space vary a lot. If multiple people will use it, test different seats for different body types.
  • Jet quality vs. quantity. Well-placed, adjustable jets in the right zones beat a high count of tiny jets. If massage is a priority, pay attention to neck, shoulder, and lumbar jets.
  • Noise and vibration. Build quality and insulation affect pump noise. Better tubs are noticeably quieter—huge for evening soaks.

New Artesian and Nordic lines are engineered for balanced therapy and comfort. A reconditioned premium-brand tub can also deliver outstanding ergonomics at a lower price—as long as the pumps and controls are in top condition.

Electrical: 110V vs. 220V and What You’ll Actually Spend

Electrical choices affect performance, installation cost, and operating experience.

110V Plug-and-Play

  • Plugs into a standard outlet (with a proper breaker)
  • Often easier and cheaper to install
  • May heat more slowly
  • In cold weather, they may not run high-speed jets and a heater at the same time

Great for budget, rentals, or when you want flexibility—but performance is more modest.

220V Hardwired

  • Requires a dedicated GFCI breaker and professional installation
  • Faster heat recovery
  • Better performance with multiple pumps
  • Stronger cold-weather capability (ideal for Idaho winters)

We don’t perform electrical work, but we’ll help you understand the requirements so your electrician can set you up correctly.

Delivery, Placement, and Setup: Don’t Overlook the Logistics

A 600–900 lb. hot tub is not a simple DIY move.

Access and pathway.

Gate width, slopes, corners, and obstacles all matter. We help plan logistics and bring the right equipment.

Base prep.

A level, stable surface is essential: a concrete pad, pavers on a compacted base, or a properly reinforced deck.

Cover lifter clearance.

You’ll need space behind or beside the tub, depending on the lifter style. We’ll help you plan clearance so it works in real life.

Startup.

Our team handles local delivery and backyard setup so your spa is positioned and ready for fill.

Availability and Timing: Lead Times vs. Ready-to-Soak

New hot tubs can have lead times depending on model and season. If you want a specific shell/cabinet combo with certain features, new may be worth the wait.

Reconditioned tubs are often available right away. If your priority is, “I want to be soaking ASAP,” a reconditioned spa on the floor might be your fastest path.

Used Hot Tubs: What Most People Don’t Check (But Should)

Used can be a great value—if you know what to look for. If you’re browsing online marketplaces or private sales, try to:

  • Wet test. See it filled and running for 30–60 minutes. Look for error codes, leaks, and odd pump noises.
  • Inspect the shell and cabinet. Watch for cracks, soft spots, or cabinet rot. Cosmetic dings are okay; structural issues are not.
  • Look underneath. Check for water damage, critter nests, and missing insulation. Poor insulation = higher bills.
  • Check the control pack and heater. Look for corrosion, burnt connectors, or patched wiring. These components are not cheap.
  • Listen to pumps. Grinding, humming, or rattling can indicate bearing or seal problems.
  • Assess the cover. A heavy, sagging, cracked cover will need to be replaced.
  • Confirm age and parts support. Very old or obscure brands can be hard or impossible to service.
  • Verify electrical specs. Voltage, amperage, and GFCI requirements must match your home.
  • Ask about sanitation features. Ozone/UV, filter age, and water care history all matter.
  • Get the serial number if possible. You can often confirm the year and model with the manufacturer.

If that checklist feels overwhelming—that’s exactly why reconditioned inventory from a specialist can be such a smart buy: the heavy lifting has already been done by a pro.

When New Is Best vs. When Used Is Smart

Both paths can be right. Here’s a simple guide:

Choose New If:

  • You want factory warranties and the latest tech in insulation, controls, and water care
  • You’re particular about shell color, cabinet style, and exact features
  • You prefer current model lines like Artesian Elite or Nordic Luxury with long-term parts support
  • You want the quietest operation and best-in-class efficiency from day one

Choose Reconditioned If:

  • You want maximum massage performance and comfort at a lower price point
  • You’re flexible on cosmetic details or model specifics
  • You value local service and a strong in-house warranty without paying new-model premiums
  • You want immediate availability and quick backyard enjoyment

Financing, Budgeting, and Total Value

Great news: we offer financing options on both new and reconditioned hot tubs. That means you can prioritize build quality, efficiency, and comfort without sacrificing essentials like a cover lifter or proper electrical work.

  • Plan the whole package: electrical, base prep, accessories, and chemicals—not just the tub
  • Protect efficiency: a good cover and insulation can pay for themselves in energy savings
  • “Buy once, cry once”: it’s often cheaper to get the right tub now than to upgrade or replace later

We’ll walk you through payment options so you can make a confident choice—whether that’s a new Artesian or Nordic, or a beautifully reconditioned spa with a strong warranty.
